Why would a search engine marketing company post a blog about chicago restaurants? Could it be we are also foodies here at Paragon Marketing Solutions? Well, a few of us are, but that’s not the reason for this blog post. We were actually having a company meeting about targeting local markets for seo. We wanted to try some very high traffic, high competition keywords. Rex was checking out the numbers for Florida when I piped in about how there must be some high traffic keywords for Chicago, my home town.

As Rex pounded away on his keyboard, the rest of us watched in screen sharing as he hit upon the phrase chicago restaurants. This keyword as a broad term is being searched at a massive volume of 550,000 monthly searches and as an exact phrase of 18,100 monthly searches. When you Google the term ‘chicago restaurants’, though, not one actual restaurant’s website is on the front page listings. In fact, you don’t see an actual restaurant site until you get to the bottom of page two. All other listings for the search term are review and rating sites.

Chicago is a HUGE city with restaurants available on almost every block. There is no way that all restaurants in existence in the area are making it to the review sites. So there’s no way that Chicago restaurants can really afford to not be listed on the front page of Google for a keyword that is getting pounded with traffic on a monthly basis. Yet, there are no restaurant sites to be found there.

So we wondered, how hard can it really be to get listed on the front page of Google for Chicago restaurants? Well, we’re putting it to the test with this blog post. We want to see exactly how long it’s going to take us to reach the front page with this one simple blog post. And if we can do it in a reasonable amount of time for one simple blog post, imagine what we could do if we were to fully search engine optimize a restaurant’s entire site for the keyword ‘chicago restaurants’. Considering we have been able to hit the front page of Google for every keyword we have tested so far, we are confident that it’s not a matter of “if” we can get to the front page for keyword chicago restaurants… it’s a matter of WHEN.
